Narratives for Europe - The Making of European Identity
Marleena Holmberg, Louis Clerc, Pekka Palmgren, Emilia Palonen, Laura Parkkinen, Sari Artjoki
The economic crisis in Europe has had a dramatic impact on the continent. Euroscepticism has increased and many have questioned the rationale behind the European integration. Economic inequality has increased and solidarity between member states has been put to the test. Citizens are finding it more and more difficult to relate to the EU, and it seems like Europe is going through an identity crisis.
What does it mean to be European? Is there such a thing as ‘European identity’? And if yes, what are the narratives behind it? This pamphlet takes up the question of European identity and examines it from different perspectives. Louis Clerc searches for the European roots. Emilia Palonen sheds light on the EU’s means to create identity through cultural policy. Pekka Palmgren is focused on separatism in Europe, whereas Laura Parkkinen delves into populism. Finally, Sari Artjoki demonstrates the Commission’s identity building agendas.
